Bonjour

Switching to PAL

Changing between PAL and NTSC:

You can do it using ResEdit (if you know what you are doing) Always work on a COPY of iMovie.

ResEdit can be downloaded from Apple and has documentation here.

for Mac OS X version of iMovie

* ResEdit is not a native Mac OS X application so you must be able to run Classic or start your Mac in 9.x.
* Start ResEdit, click away the splash screen and you will be presented with a file open dialog.
* Open your Mac OS X disk
* open "Applications"
* open "iMovie.app"
* open "Contents"
* open "Resources"
* open <YourLanguage>.lproj i.e. "English.lproj"
* open "Localized.rsrc"
* open "STR#"
* open ID 11 "Default to PAL or NTSC"
* In the box titled "The string" you enter which system you want to use, in capital letters PAL or NTSC.
* Save file and quit ResEdit.

for Mac OS 9 version of iMovie

* Start your Mac in 9.x.
* Start ResEdit, click away the splash screen and you will be presented with a file open dialog.
* Open the "iMovie 2.x" folder (which contains an iMovie folder and an iMovie alias)
* open the "iMovie" folder
* open the "Resources" folder
* open the "Languages" folder
* open the file named after your language (There is normally only one language and one file)
* open "STR#"
* open ID 11 "Default to PAL or NTSC"
* In the box titled "The string" you enter which system you want to use, in capital letters PAL or NTSC.
* Save file and quit ResEdit.

Switching to PAL, a last ditch effort

1. Delete your preference file
2. Shut down your Mac
3. Plug in your camcorder to the FireWire port and the electrical outlet
4. Put the camcorder in VCR mode
5. Boot and pray (if you do that type of thing)
6. Open iMovie

Tips:

You make sure there is not a startup project by trashing the preferences file. The preferences file also has an entry for NTSC or PAL, so iMovie won't know what format to use. It should ask your camera for the format.

Make sure you don't open any existing NTSC projects. You don't have to trash them, as long as you realize that if you open an NTSC project, you will have to go through all this again to put it back to PAL.

iMovie should detect PAL from your PAL camera if it hasn't been told to use either format.
