Optical Drive Upgrades for The Cube
The internal Cube DVD drive can be replaced with a CD-RW drive from a slot-loading iMac.
You should be able to purchase one from any Apple Authorized Service Center.
A source for a suitable slot-loading DVD/CD-RW "combo" drive has FINALLY been found.
Update from MCE Technology regarding Combo drives for Cubes:
In June 2002, CubeOwner posted a survey, with MCE's blessings, regarding interest in a Combo drive for the Cube. MCE responds to the results as follows:
Dear Laurie,
Our company's position right now, based on our results and on your comments and suggestions, is that we are moving forward with the development of a slot-loading combo drive for the Cube. We anticipate availability to be around September. Exact specs to be determined at that time. ETA is based on development time and availability of mechanisms... both of which are dynamic variables which can either move up or push back the actual delivery date. We feel confident about the September date, however.
Once we get closer to a delivery date we can possibly pursue a pre- sale and we will likely offer discounts to those who read your site as they were instrumental in our decision-making process for this product.
Thanks to the more than 500 of you who took the time to particiapte in the survey. Give yourselves a hand!
