Word Test Drive for X causes problems in OS 9: a fix
In response to our coverage on Word Test Drive for X reassigning documents so they were no longer opened by previous versions of Word, Luis Aguila offers this fix:
"To fix the problem with double-clicking a Word file in OS9 and having the system try to launch Word Test Drive, simply follow these steps:
1. Select a Word file in the OS X Finder
2. Do "Command + I" to Show Info
3. Choose "Open with application" in the drop-down menu
4. Choose "Word 9.0.2" as the application you want to open the file with
5. Click "Change All..."
6. Click "Continue" in the alert box
The files will now open properly in OS 9."
Sandeep Mulgund adds: "I solved the problem by deleting Word X and rebuilding the desktop. This restored the document icons to their previous Word 98 appearance."
OX versions of apps launch in OS 9: a work-around We continue to get reports that, when booted in OS 9, double-clicking documents leads to a (typically failed) attempt to open the OS X version of the application instead of the OS 9 version (assuming both versions are on your drive(s)). This can happen with Office documents as well as Acrobat documents and others. A common work-around is to compress (such as with DropStuff) the OS X application and then rebuild the desktop. You can now decompress the OS X version and documents should still correctly launch the OS 9 version of the application. See also previous coverage. (Thanks, Charles Athey and others.)
Office docs in OS 9 launch OS X apps: another follow-up We've previously commented on the problem (and possible solutions) where double-clicking Office documents in OS 9 may erroneously launch the OS X version of the Office application. Richard Bottiglieri offers yet another solution: Use Save a BNDL. He writes: "To use it, you must be booted into OS 9. Simply drag all of the Office 2001 application icons onto the Save a BNDL icon. This will basically tell the Finder's database to get the icon information for any Office documents (determined by the documents' creator codes) from the Office 2001 version of the applications. In addition, double-clicking any Office file now launches the appropriate application in OS 9."
